CHHSM Planned Giving Partnership

Foundation for the Future

Planned gifts are ideal vehicles for assuring future development of the mission and ministry that is important to you.

All gifts are planned in some manner, but planned giving traditionally encompasses those gifts that are given or promised now but not received by the charitable institution until after the death of the donor. These include:

  • bequests in a will
  • charitable life-income gifts (Gift Annuities, Charitable Remainder Trusts)
  • life insurance (name a charity as a beneficiary, or actually gift the policy to the charity)
  • IRA assets (name a charity as a beneficiary of your IRA and leave other assets to heirs - IRAs can be very expensive for heirs to inherit)

Year-end gifts assure charitable tax deductions for those who itemize, and may be an important aspect of a donor's overall financial and estate planning. A Charitable Gift Annuity can significantly increase a donor's spendable income, produce a charitable tax deduction for the current year, and lock in a gift to an institution whose work truly makes a difference. Depending on the form of funding, some income may be tax-free. In addition to cash, gift annuities may also be funded by transfer of appreciated securities which can provide capital gains tax savings. The annual annuity amount is based on a rate dependent upon the donor's age: the older the donor, the higher the annuity rate.
