Newsweek Ranks UCC-related Abernethy Laurels One of the Best Nursing Home in North Carolina

Newsweek recently released a new, national ranking of nursing homes in North Carolina. Abernethy Laurels, a Newton, N.C., continuing care community, ranked at the top of their list.

Newsweek, an international news source founded in 1933, partnered with a global data research firm, Statista Inc., to establish a ranking of nursing homes. According to Newsweek, there are more than 47 million Americans age 65 and older today. By 2030, Newsweek reports that the 65+ demographic will account for more than 20 percent of U.S. residents, and studies say that 70 percent of them will need some kind of long-term care. The oldest baby boomers are already in their 70s. In short, Newsweek determined the need for safe and reliable elder care is only growing.

The statistics are what urged Newsweek to establish a ranking of nursing homes. To determine the distinction, there was an evaluation on performance data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and a reputation survey of nurses, nursing home administrators, therapists and physicians. The data included measures on quality, staffing and health inspections. Out of thousands of senior care organizations in the United States, Newsweek only recognized 406 locations. The Newsweek survey rated Abernethy Laurels second in North Carolina.

The top seven include:

  1. Black Mountain (N.C.) Neuro-Medical Center
  2. Abernethy Laurels, Newton, N.C.
  3. North Carolina State Veterans Home, Fayetteville, N.C.
  4. Brian Center Heath and Rehabilitation, Gastonia, N.C.
  5. White Oak Manor of Burlington, N.C.
  6. White Oak Manor of Kings Mountain, N.C.
  7. Carrington Place Rehabilitation & Living Center, Matthews, N.C.

“Our mission to provide compassionate, person-centered care to those we serve is our top priority day in and day out,” shared Ashley Sigmon, nursing home administrator at Abernethy Laurels. “It’s tremendous to be recognized on a national level for our commitment to care and to know that our efforts are making a difference.”
