U.S. News began evaluating maternity care hospitals in 2021, rating hospitals that provide labor and delivery services and submit detailed data to the publication for analysis. U.S. News evaluated 817 hospitals from across the United States. The U.S. News Best Hospitals for Maternity Care methodology is based entirely on objective measures of quality, such as cesarean section rates in lower-risk pregnancies, severe unexpected newborn complication rates, exclusive breast milk feeding rates, birthing-friendly practices and reporting on racial/ethnic disparities, among other measures.

Six Advocate Health hospitals were also designated “Maternity Care Access Hospitals,” recognizing hospitals that provide quality care to expectant parents in areas that would otherwise be maternity care deserts. These hospitals include Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center, in Rome, Ga.; Atrium Health Cleveland, in Shelby, N.C.; Atrium Health Stanly, in Albemarle, N.C.; Atrium Health Union, in Monroe, N.C.; Atrium Health Union West, in Matthews, N.C.; and Aurora Medical Center – Bay Area, in Marinette, Wis.

The U.S. News Maternity Care Access Hospitals designation is based on several measures, including geographic isolation, number of obstetric providers per 10,000 births and hospital quality. Maternity Care Access Hospitals must also meet quality measures for C-section, severe, unexpected newborn complications and episiotomy.

Earlier this year, Advocate Health was recognized by U.S. News & World Report with eight “Top 50” rankings and 32 “High Performing” specialties at its hospitals. Additionally, for the 17th consecutive year, Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital, in Charlotte, was recently recognized as one of U.S. News’s “Best Children’s Hospitals.” In addition to ranking among the Top 50 in the country across 10 pediatric specialties, the hospital also earned the prestigious ranking of the No.1 children’s hospital in North Carolina and tied for the No.1 children’s hospital in the southeastern United States. Advocate Children’s Hospital in Chicago is also ranked nationally in Pediatric Cardiology & Heart Surgery.

Atrium Health Pineville, in Charlotte, N.C., and Aurora Medical Center Grafton, in Grafton, Wis., were two of 26 hospitals nationwide identified by U.S. News earlier this year during Black Maternal Health Week for achieving excellent outcomes for cesarean section and unexpected newborn complications among Black patients.
