In Times of Trial, the Work of Justice Prevails
As we welcome a new year, the challenges we face as a society remind us of the critical importance of our work in health and human services. From devastating natural disasters like the relentless wildfires in California to broader social and economic divisions, these events expose systemic inequities and human need. Our CHHSM family’s mission to provide compassionate care, advocate for justice, and bring hope is more vital than ever. It is the people in our ministries — those who offer shelter and comfort when lives are upended, who fill the gaps when systems fall short, and who embody kindness and resilience — who show us what it means to live out justice and compassion every day.
This is why Health and Human Service Sunday on January 26 holds such special meaning. It is a day to honor the tireless efforts of health and human service workers who demonstrate love in action. I encourage each of you to take time on this day to lift up these dedicated individuals in your prayers and reflections. Let us also express our gratitude in tangible ways — a heartfelt note, a simple thank you, or an act of kindness that acknowledges their vital work. You can find resources to celebrate Health and Human Service Sunday on our CHHSM website, including liturgical guides and reflections.
Our annual CHHSM gathering is another opportunity to deepen our commitment to this work and to one another. I am thrilled to invite you to the 2025 Annual Gathering, which will take place from March 11-13 in the historic and vibrant setting of Boston/Cambridge, Massachusetts. This year’s theme, Into the Deep: Casting Nets of Justice, invites us to explore bold, faith-driven leadership rooted in our shared mission. Luke 5:4 inspires us to go beyond the familiar, casting wide our nets to build a more just and equitable future.
The gathering will feature thought-provoking keynote speakers, dynamic workshops, and opportunities for fellowship and renewal. Together, we will reflect on innovative collaborations that serve the common good, drawing strength from the nautical heritage of our host city and the justice-oriented history of the United Church of Christ. Whether you are a seasoned leader or new to CHHSM’s circle, this event promises to equip, inspire, and connect you with others who share your passion for transformative health and human service ministry. I hope to see each of you there as we chart a course for justice, resilience, and hope.
In these challenging times, our collective efforts are a beacon of light in the darkness. Thank you for the extraordinary work you do, for your courage, and for your commitment to justice and compassion. May we continue to strengthen one another, casting our nets wide as we heed the call to love and serve.
