Like Fine Wine: Emmaus Homes Benefits From Unique Valentine’s Day Cheer
A unique partnership is being uncorked this month for United Church of Christ-related Emmaus Homes in St. Charles, Mo. In a one-of-a-kind fundraiser, Emmaus and two local businesses are providing area residents with the opportunity to increase their giving this Valentine’s Day.
“Just for You” invites area neighbors to purchase their Valentine’s flowers at Hillermann Nursery & Florist in Washington, Mo., and pick up a bottle of Emmaus Wine while there.
Available in Red Blend, Sauvignon Blanc, and Moscato, the wine is produced by 100 Percent Wine, a St. Louis organization that strives to partner with local nonprofits to create meaningful jobs for people with disabilities. Proceeds from the sales will benefit both Emmaus and 100 Percent Wine.
“Emmaus is incredibly lucky to have such a supportive network of various businesses and organizations within the communities we serve,” says Tim Ryan, special events coordinator at Emmaus. The “Just for You” fundraiser was conceptualized by the president of Hillermann, Sandra Hillermann McDonald, and Emmaus’ development manager Lisa Drier, Ryan says.
Key to the fundraiser’s success is the wine. Emmaus Wine was launched with 100 Percent Wine in 2014 as a way to provide Emmaus Homes with a steady source of revenue.
“As our missions are so similar, it is a perfect fit as we seek to enrich the lives of adults living with disabilities in our communities and beyond,” says Ryan.
Besides, he says, “Who doesn’t like wine? Whenever a bottle is purchased, the buyer can feel good knowing that they are helping not one, but two, charities at the same time,” Ryan adds. “We have received a lot of interest and positive feedback. We even have a few regular customers” –– customers who are sure to purchase their flowers and wine at Hillermann’s for Tuesday’s romance-filled holiday.
While the fundraiser is offering a one-of-a-kind way for St Louis-area neighbors to celebrate Valentine’s Day, many of Emmaus’ homes also are celebrating the holiday in special ways, from karaoke and dancing to cookie parties. Some will be joined by partner UCC congregations in spreading the love.
Founded in 1893, Emmaus Homes serves clients in more than 70 homes throughout Franklin, Warren, St. Charles, and St. Louis counties, and provides round-the-clock services to more than 275 adults with developmental disabilities in the St. Louis metropolitan area.
