Arcadia Family of Companies Celebrate Lunar New Year in Meaningful, Festive Ways

The Gee Yung Lion Dance Association performed for residents.

The Arcadia Family of Companies, based in Honolulu, celebrated the new year — and particularly the Lunar New Year — through a variety of activities. The largest celebration included lion dances performed by the Gee Yung Lion Dance Association, marking the beginning of the Year of the Wood Snake.

The Year of the Wood Snake symbolizes wisdom, growth, and transformation. Lion dances are a symbolic gesture to drive away bad spirits and invite wealth, happiness, and success for the year ahead. The dance promotes harmony and renewal in both personal and professional spaces.

In addition, 15 Craigside, Arcadia, and Hale Ola Kino by Arcadia residents started the new year with a special blessing from the Rev. Dr. George Scott, part of Arcadia’s chaplaincy team. Scott visited each department to offer prayers for health, peace, and prosperity, fostering unity and positivity among residents and staff.

The event marked a meaningful start to 2025, with everyone feeling spiritually renewed as they entered the new year. Scott’s heartfelt words and presence brought comfort and hope for the months ahead.

Going on Holoholo

The beautiful surroundings of Sandy Beacon O’ahu.

The Hawai’ian word holoholo means to go for a walk, a stroll or a sail, and two Arcadia communities celebrated the new year by going on holoholo.

Residents of Hale Ola Kino by Arcadia went on holoholo to Sandy Beach, where they enjoyed stunning ocean views and the soothing sound of waves crashing on the shore. Sandy Beach, also referred to as “Sandy’s” and known to Hawaiians as Wāwāmalu, is on the southeastern shore of O’ahu, Hawai’i.

The trip was relaxing, and residents had the chance to take in the beauty of their surroundings, soaking up the warm sun and gentle breeze. It was the perfect opportunity to unwind, reflect, and embrace the natural beauty around them.

Additionally, Arcadia Adult Day Care clients embarked on a refreshing outing to Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden in Kaneohe, Hawai’i, where they were captivated by the awe-inspiring Koolau Mountains and the vibrant, flourishing garden. After soaking in the picturesque scenery and wandering through the lush landscapes, they enjoyed a tasty lunch provided by the dining team at Arcadia. It was a nice break from their routines and a rejuvenating way to start the new year.

“Happy Lunar New Year!” said Suzie Schulberg, president and CEO of Arcadia. “2025 welcomes in the Year of the Wood Snake, symbolizing transformation, growth, and reflection. Take time to nurture yourself, find balance, and most importantly, embrace the joy and energy of the New Year!”
