EdenHill Communities New Partnership with the VA to Benefit Local Veterans and their Spouses
CHHSM member EdenHill Communities in New Braunfels, Texas, announced recently that eligible veterans and their spouses at or near EdenHill will be able to receive long-term nursing and short-term rehabilitation services from the Veterans Administration (VA). In June, the VA awarded two new contracts to EdenHill.
EdenHill, which began in San Antonio 113 years ago as a retirement home for pastors, today provides skilled nursing, assisted living, hospice care, and memory care. Additionally, its apartment complex offers several options for older adults, including independent living, assisted living, or a combination of the two.
“Most people don’t realize that, for veterans’ long-term care services, there’s only nine VA-run homes in the entire state of Texas,” EdenHill CEO Wendy Carpenter told Hannah Thompson of The Herald-Zeitung in June. “The closest one that a veteran would have to go to would be in Floresville [an hour away], so that takes them away from their home and their family and their community.”
The distance to Floresville has meant that in the past, some VA-eligible New Braunfels residents chose to pay privately instead of going to Floresville, or selected a lower-rated nursing home nearby. EdenHill has some 60 veterans and their spouses who will benefit from the contracts. The VA also might refer local residents to EdenHill.
Because of the new partnership, people who are eligible for benefits because of their service will have the opportunity to stay in their community, Carpenter told The Herald-Zeitung, which can only benefit veterans and their families in the future.
