Former Lydia’s House Resident Gives Thanks

My name is Sarah and I am a domestic violence survivor. I was married to my abuser for 15 years. I spent many of those years being physically, emotionally, and financially abused. One day, I couldn’t take the mental and physical abuse anymore. When my abuser left for work, I left the house with my dog, Ginger, wearing my pajamas and slippers. I had no plan and no money, but knew we needed to leave.

When we got to a safe place, I started calling all of the local shelters. I was so scared we wouldn’t be able to find a safe place for both of us. Ginger was my safety. I called and called and finally heard the response I needed. A shelter was coming to pick up Ginger and me! We had found temporary safety.

After only several weeks at the shelter, we had to find a new place to stay. My case manager told me there was an apartment available for us at Lydia’s House — I couldn’t believe it! I found out that it was a pet-friendly, transitional housing program for domestic violence survivors, and it was a miracle that we were going there!

Once we arrived at Lydia’s House, I met my advocates, who welcomed me with open arms. When they showed me my own, fully-furnished apartment, I couldn’t believe how nice it was. It already felt like home! This was our new beginning, and I was ready to start rebuilding our lives. We found some peace in knowing we had a stable, supportive place to stay for up to two years.

During my stay, Lydia’s House connected me with food pantries, therapy, counseling, and support groups to help me heal from my years of mental and physical abuse. For two years, I was able to work hard and save money for permanent housing for Ginger and me. Lydia’s House saved our lives and blessed me with so many opportunities to heal and grow. I would not be where I am today without Lydia’s House, and I cannot say thank you enough!
