Ray Mancini

Phoebe Ministries is seeking proposals for the Phoebe Institute on Aging’s 2023 Conference, “We Rise Together: Seniors Rebound with Resilience and Hope.” The conference is slated for April 27, 2023, at DeSales University in Center Valley, Pa., and features boxing legend Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini as the keynote speaker.

The conference will examine resiliency in older adults, from normal aging processes to environmental stresses. It will discuss clinician and practitioner strategies and techniques to promote resiliency in older adults, and will examine community supports that strengthen the resiliency of older adults.

The objectives of the conference are:

  • Discuss wellness strategies that promote the development of resiliency as applied to older adults.
  • Discuss ways in which long term care providers can promote residents’ resiliency through the use of clinician care techniques and senior activity programming.
  •  Discuss supports that promote resiliency of seniors from diverse cultures within the community environment.

Instructions and applications for submitting a proposal for the conference’s break-out sessions  are available online.

Keynoter Mancini, known as “Boom Boom,” is one of the living legends of boxing. He is a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame and the former WBA lightweight champion from 1982 to 1984. Mancini was inspired at a young age to get into the sport because of his father, also an accomplished boxer. Mancini had a 43-7 record as an amateur before making it to the highest levels of the sport. As a pro, he fought in 34 fights, going 29-5 with 23 wins by knockout.

Since retiring from boxing, Mancini has been involved in various business interests. He produced a documentary about his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio, and is negotiating to open a digital media studio in the Youngstown area.
