UCC-related Tougaloo College Awards Daniel Presidential Citation
Earlier this fall, Tougaloo (Miss.) College, an Historically Black College founded by the UCC’s American Missionary Association, presented the Rev. Kenneth V. Daniel, CEO and president of United Church Homes, with its prestigious Presidential Citation during the college’s 151st Founders’ Convocation. The award was presented for Daniel’s lifelong work and commitment to senior healthcare and housing services.
Daniel accepted the award after deliverying a keynote address for the college’s 151st Founders’ Convocation. “At the core of United Church Homes is an inclusive culture, committed to welcoming, hearing and valuing individuals from different races, genders, ages, religions, identities, and experiences,” said Daniel. “I am honored to receive an award from an esteemed college that embraces a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion.”
With roots dating to 1869, Tougaloo College is a private, historically Black liberal arts college, located just north of Jackson, Miss. The college achieved national recognition for its academics and commitment to equality and justice, opening its doors to Freedom Riders and other Civil Rights activists during the 1960s. Tougaloo College is affiliated with the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The UCH relationship with the college has grown to include a new educational partnership where students at Tougaloo College can gain professional experience in healthcare and other disciplines through United Church Homes communities.
The award praised Daniel, noting his “imagination, tenacity and flair for making things happen.” As a former UCC pastor and nursing home administrator, he also was honored for leading by example and using his work “to focus on others’ well-being, putting into action the concepts of social justice and other biblical values.”
